Monday 17th – Mercury in Aquarius
On the evening of 3rd January 2010, Robert Powell assisted in officially inaugurating the coming into being of Sophia Australis – the Sophia Community in Australia. As the co-founder of the Sophia Foundation of North America, and a co-bearer of the Sophia impulse through his many workshops, writings and lectures, Robert is well situated to have worked with us in forming a community in honour of Sophia.
As mentioned in our constitution, Sophia refers to the spiritual being indicated through (but not limited to) such works as those of R. Steiner, V. Tomberg, P. Florensky and V. Solovyov.
As an association, Sophia Australis has a fourfold purpose: cultivating a deeper understanding of Divine Wisdom, integrating philosophy, religion, science and the arts; creating a vessel for a path to Sophia through study, dance, eurythmy, anthroposophy, prayer, meditation, and community celebration; serving Divine Sophia by engaging in creative activities which seek to express Divine Love; publically representing and encouraging any of the above in publications, events and practices.
Sophia is a potentising force that unites all human beings and peoples as members of one spiritual family. This is a spiritual family which is united through the peace and harmony of Divine Wisdom – as Sophia is the manifestation of Divine Wisdom. Sophia nurtures the future global culture of brotherhood and sisterhood, known as the ‘Rose of the World’. It is this future culture which the Sophia Community of Australia aspires to develop in ‘seed form’.
The Russian Sophiologist, Daniel Andreev, has spoken of Sophia in this way: ‘There she is, our hope and our joy, Light and Divine Beauty! For her birth will be mirrored in our history as something that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will witness: the founding of the Rose of the World and its spread throughout the world.’
It is this founding of the Rose of the World, in Australia, that we celebrated on the evening of 3rd January 2010 at the Michael Centre in Warranwood. Music, Poetry and Movement (Choreocosmos) formed a central aspect of our celebration that evening. We wish to approach Sophia with our hearts and souls suffused with deep devotion.
Other writers, philosophers and mystics have written and spoken of Sophia. In the Bible King Solomon’s ‘Song of Songs’ is a reflection in her honour. Jakob Boehme spoke of her as: ‘the mother of all creatures, the matrix in which are heaven, the stars, the elements, the Earth, and everything that lives and grows, contained as if in a single image.’
Teilhard de Chardin had this to say of her: ‘When I was born, I came into being. I am the unfolding beauty of times to come. In me Grace is at work to divinize the soul. I shall continue to disclose myself to you. I am the Eternal Feminine.’
The German Romantic poet and scientist, Goethe, said: ‘The Eternal Feminine draws us upward.’
While Vladimir Soloviev declared, ‘Let it be known: Today the Eternal Feminine in an incorruptible body, is descending to Earth. In the unfading light of the new Goddess, Heaven has become one with the depths.’
The great bestower of Spiritual Science, Rudolf Steiner, called the spiritual stream he established ‘Anthroposophy’ – Divine Wisdom of the Human Being – the ‘Anthropos’.
Sophia also appears in the Book of Revelation as a Woman, clothed with the Stars, bearing the Sun, with the Moon beneath her feet. Through Sophia we are able to once more establish a soul and spiritual relationship with the stars, as spiritual beings. Through Choreocosmos we come into communion with these great beings, we become a community of dancers, dancing with the stars, and for all the kingdoms of the earth.
